CCSD Canvas Parent Guide

Canvas is the Learning Management System used by students in the Cherokee County School District. Canvas helps organize assignments, course content, assessments, grades, standards, messages, and learning tools in one place.

This guide will help you:

• Access Canvas
• Create a Parent/Observer account
• Link your child or children to your account
• Understand parent features
• Set up contact methods and notification preferences

Access Canvas

To get started, use a laptop or desktop computer. Google Chrome is preferred. Parents should create their account and link their student or students on a laptop or desktop first. After the account is set up, you can use the mobile app if you would like.

Parent login link: https://myccsd.instructure.com/login/canvas

Create a Parent/Observer Account

1. Select Click Here for Parent Account.
2. Enter your first and last name.
3. Enter your email address.
4. Create a password.
5. Enter the student pairing code.
6. Select the box to agree to the terms.
7. Select Start Participating.

Get a Student Pairing Code

You will need a pairing code from your child’s student Canvas account.

1. In Global Navigation, select Account.
2. Select Settings.
3. Select Pair with Observer.
4. Copy the six-digit alphanumeric pairing code.
5. Share that code with the parent or observer who will link to the account.

Log In to Your Parent Account

After your account has been created, always use the parent login link below:

https://myccsd.instructure.com/login/canvas

Use your email address in the login field and the password you created in the password field. If you forget your password, select Forgot Password and follow the steps to reset it.

Link Additional Students

If you have more than one child, you can link multiple students to one parent account.

1. Log in to your Canvas parent account.
2. Select Account from the left navigation menu.
3. Select Settings.
4. Select Observing.
5. Enter the pairing code for the additional student.
6. Select Add Student.
7. Repeat the process for each additional child.

Add Contact Methods

Canvas can send notifications through email, text message (SMS), and push notifications. Notifications apply to all courses in Canvas.

Add Another Email Address

1. Select Account.
2. Select Settings.
3. In the Ways to Contact section, select Add Email Address.
4. Enter the additional email address and confirm it if prompted.

Add a Cell Number for Text Messages

1. Select Account.
2. Select Settings.
3. Select Add Contact Method.
4. Select the Text (SMS) tab.
5. Enter your 10-digit cell phone number.
6. Select your phone carrier.
7. Select Register SMS.
8. Enter the confirmation code sent to your phone.
9. Select Confirm.

Set Notification Preferences

Canvas includes default notification settings, but you can change them based on how often you want to receive updates. Notification settings apply to all of your courses.

The available delivery choices are:

• Notify right away
• Daily summary
• Weekly summary
• Do not send

To change your notification settings:

1. Select Account.
2. Select Notifications.
3. Find the notification you want to change.
4. Select the icon for the delivery type you prefer.
